Ag Weather Highlights

In the West, showers and thunderstorms are mostly confined to the Four Corners region. Elsewhere, late season warmth and dry conditions are promoting crop maturation and fieldwork, including initial Northwestern winter wheat planting efforts.

On the Plains, dry weather favors fieldwork, including spring wheat harvesting in Montana and North Dakota. However, excessively dry conditions are delaying winter wheat planting preparations on the drought-devastated southern Plains. In addition, wildfires remain a threat in the drought-affected areas of the south-central U.S.

In the Corn Belt, cool weather and scattered showers linger in the Ohio and middle Mississippi Valleys. In
contrast, warm, dry weather across the upper Midwest favors corn and soybean maturation.

In the South, dry weather and near- to below-normal temperatures are promoting summer crop maturation and fieldwork, including corn and rice harvesting.

Outlook:

Hurricane Katia will pass well east of the New England coast today, while Tropical Storm Nate—over the
southern Gulf of Mexico—should begin to turn westward and make a Mexican landfall during the weekend. The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee will generate a few more heavy showers in the northern Mid-Atlantic region, but widespread flooding will persist through the weekend along the Susquehanna River and several neighboring river basins. Elsewhere, significant rainfall during the next 5 days will be confined to Florida’s peninsula and the Four Corners States, although a few showers will linger across the central and eastern Corn Belt. Meanwhile, warmth across the northern U.S. will gradually expand to cover most of the remainder of the nation by early next week. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for September 14-18 calls for near- to above-normal temperatures nationwide, except for cooler-than-normal weather in an area centered on the Ohio Valley and the lower Great Lakes region. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal rainfall across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the East and the Four Corners region.

Ag Weather Highlights

In the West, cool weather and isolated showers are mostly confined to the southern Rockies. Elsewhere, warm, dry weather is promoting fieldwork and summer crop maturation.

On the Plains, temperatures are rebounding to near- or above-normal levels in Texas, where several large
wildfires continue to burn. Meanwhile on the northern Plains, a warm, dry weather regime favors crop
maturation and fieldwork, including initial winter wheat planting efforts.

In the Corn Belt, scattered showers are affecting eastern areas, including parts of Indiana, Ohio, and
Michigan. Elsewhere, sunny weather is promoting crop maturation and early-season corn harvesting. By
September 4, the corn harvest was 11% complete in Missouri and 3% complete in Illinois.

In the South, locally heavy showers linger across Florida’s peninsula and the southern Mid-Atlantic coastal
plain. Elsewhere, cool but dry weather favors summer crop maturation and harvesting.

Outlook:

Heavy rainfall loosely associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee will continue today from the
Mid-Atlantic coastal plain into the Northeast. Significant flooding can be expected where heavy rain falls on soils already saturated in late August by Hurricane Irene. Elsewhere in the tropics, Hurricane Katia is turning away from the U.S. mainland, while Tropical Storm Nate—in the southern Gulf of Mexico—does not pose an immediate threat to the U.S. Meanwhile, warmth focused across the nation’s northern tier will gradually return to the remainder of the nation. Aside from lingering tropical showers in Florida and the Northeast, significant rainfall will be mostly limited to the Southwest and parts of the Intermountain West. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for September 13-17 calls for warmer-than-normal weather across the western half of the nation, while near- to below-normal temperatures will prevail from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast. Meanwhile, above-normal rainfall in the East and parts of the Intermountain West will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions in the south-central U.S. and from the Pacific Northwest into the upper Midwest.

CFTC Report

In last Friday’s Commitment of Traders report, the large specs trimmed long positions by 10,933 contracts while adding 3,045 new short positions. Corn speculators remain long by almost 5:1. Since Tuesday however, funds likely bought new longs all week.

Soybean traders net sold positions as of Tuesday by 1,217 contracts, leaving soybean specs long a net 111,723 contracts.

Traders have moved Chicago wheat into a net short position as of Tuesday, selling just over 9700 longs while adding 6,876 new short positions. A net short Chicago wheat crowd might just get painful if dry weather in the U.S. and world gets worse. KC Wheat remains net long at 48,457 contracts.
