Kansas winter wheat conditions dropped significantly in the monthly state NASS report yesterday, coming in at 35% good/excellent, down from 65% g/ex in November—the state accounts for 21% of U.S. winter wheat plantings for 2014. Oklahoma came in at 36% g/ex, down from 73% in Nov, with Nebraska at 46%% vs 72% previously, and Texas at 19% vs 37% in November.

Informa released an updated Brazil corn production estimate at 66.55 million tons, down 1 million ton from previous estimate and 3.45 million tons below the USDA's current estimate. Informa pegged 2014 corn acreage at 93.3 million acres, up 1.5 million from their December estimate but 2.05 million acres below the 2013 corn acreage. Informa pegged 2014 soybean acreage at 81.26 million, down 550,000 acres from their December estimate but 4.73 million acres above the 2013 bean acreage.

In today’s major USDA supply and demand report, most traders were surprised by larger corn feed demand numbers, up 100 million bushels and ethanol by another 50 million bushels. Corn ending stocks were reduced to 1.631 billion bushels from December report at 1.792 billion bushels. The trade guess average was too high by 224 million bushels or 12%! Well followed private analyst, Informa Economics, projected the 2013 U.S. corn production at 14.162 billion bushels, 173 million bushels larger that the USDA’s December estimate. Informa pegged the U.S. corn yield at 161.6 bu/acre, 1.2 bushels higher than the December USDA estimate.
